Welcome back to school for the summer term! We hope you had a refreshing break and are ready for an exciting final term of the academic year.The summer term is always a busy and rewarding time filled with key milestones, outdoor activities, and celebrations.

A very warm welcome back to all our children as we begin the final half term of the school year. We hope you and your children enjoyed a relaxing break and that they have returned refreshed and ready for the exciting weeks ahead. The summer term is always a special one, filled with opportunities for learning, growth, celebrations, and memorable experiences. We will be enjoying lots of outdoor adventures in the sun during our Waddecar visit, plus some thrilling end of term trips for the children to look forward to. We will also be saying farewell to our Year 6 Leavers; although this is always an emotional time, it is also a time where we get to reflect on some wonderful memories made at Calder Lodge School. We are looking forward to enjoying the final chapter of the year!

DON’T FORGET……If your child has any medical appointments, please inform school in advance where possible – you MUST send a copy (either hard copy or a picture by email) of the appointment letter/card/text to school for our register.If your child is absent due to illness, please telephone school before 8.00 am and leave a message. Your child will not be collected for school until you inform us that they are well enough to return.

PARENT REMINDER

Please can sun cream be applied to children during the summer months. It would also be useful to bring a sun hat in for playtimes and trips. During the summer months children can wear shorts, but they MUST be plain black/grey or school shorts – no sports motifs. 

CURRICULUM

This term, we will continue exploring our topic of Flow, building on the knowledge and understanding developed so far. Through a range of engaging activities, the children will deepen their understanding of rivers, waterways, and their importance to both people and the environment.

In English, the children will develop their creative writing skills through a variety of imaginative and inspiring writing opportunities. They will focus on using rich vocabulary, descriptive language, and effective storytelling techniques to bring their ideas to life.

In Geography, our learning will include fieldwork, allowing the children to apply their geographical skills in a real-world context. They will observe, investigate, and collect information to help them better understand the local environment and geographical features linked to our topic.

In Art, the children will explore landscape drawing, develop their observational skills and experiment with different techniques to create detailed and expressive representations of natural scenery inspired by our topic.

In Science, we will be focusing on light and shadow. The children will investigate how light travels, how shadows are formed, and how the size and shape of shadows can change. Through practical investigations, they will develop their scientific enquiry skills and deepen their understanding of this fascinating area of science.

CULTURAL CAPITAL

Last term the children enjoyed an exciting field trip to different locations along the River Wyre, where they took part in a variety of scientific investigations. At each stop, the children collected soil samples and water samples to take back to school for further testing and analysis. They carefully observed the environment around the river and discussed how the river changes in different areas.

This term we are excited about our upcoming, end of year, visit to Waddecar. The children will take part in a range of adventurous outdoor activities designed to build confidence, teamwork and resilience. This promises to be a fun and memorable experience, giving the children the opportunity to challenge themselves, develop new skills and enjoy learning outdoors.
