12/09/2023-Morecambe Bay Crabbing

Today’s Culture Capital trip involved Calder class visiting Morecambe Crabbing Pool.  This was a new school experience for all of the pupils.  Some of them had been ‘crabbing’ when on holidaying with their families.  One of the class members is a keen angler.  He was eager to put his skills into action.

The class had all the relevant equipment, and a super-charged spirit to catch a bounty of crabs.  Unfortunately, the crabs weren’t tempted by the bacon bait and many of the pupils were disheartened.  However, there was lots of peer on peer support and a dogged determination to succeed. 

The few pupils that did find some crabs were spontaneously congratulated by their peers.  Dark rain clouds meant an early finish but the pupils were cheerful and chatty on the drive back to school.

Whole school sports day.

Sack racing, tugawar, sprinting, throwing were all on show.

A beautiful sunny day at Heysham.

Parlick class loved the adventure around Heysham head.

Big sky.

Secret gardens.

The majority of school headed out for a fun filled day at laser tag.

Top team work was essential.

Awesome day out.

A select group of pupils had a wonderful end of year trip to Legoland, Manchester.

Great fun was had by all in the immersive Lego environment.

A group of year 6 leavers had a very exciting time staying over night at Waddecar activity centre.

The afternoon was spent getting stuck in to outdoor activities including stream walking.

Team work was absolutely essential during the high tower building exercise using climbing frames and ropes.

Having used gross motor skills and and team work to great effect the pupils then had opportunity to hone there fine motor skills on the shooting range.

Using air rifles under strict guidance from the tutor the pupils excelled at target practice.

Friendships and fond memories were embedded. Happy times as the end of their Calder Lodge journey nears an end.

Calder Lodge School had the pleasure of hosting Keyes Barn school for an inter-school football tournament at playfootball.com.

Great fun was had by all with some awesome teamwork on show.

Three teams competed for the outright victory.

The winners were Keyes Barn school. All involved had an excellent day out with sportsmanship at the forefront.

A special mention must go to Ben (Left) who instigated and helped organise the tournament.

On Wednesday 5th July, Calder Class visited Greenbank Farm in Carnforth for our Cultural Capital trip.  This term the class has been engaged in a topic called ‘Sow, Grow and Farm’.

Over the term we have grown lettuce, strawberries, herbs, tomatoes and potatoes.  To round the topic off, we visited a local fruit picking farm.  The children worked in pairs to fill their punnets with raspberries and blackcurrants.

A few brave pupils attempted to eat really sour gooseberries.

All the pupils loved finding ripe fruit to fill up their punnets (and their bellies).  Later this week, we plan to make jars of jam and distribute them to the other classes.  They will be able to share the fruits of our labour with their morning slice of toast courtesy of Calder class.

Calder class had an absolutely brilliant day out at Waddecar scout camp for a teambuilding adventure exercise. The class used a whole spectrum of skills learnt in school including space, shape and measure from Math’s and speaking and listening from English. Patience, turn taking, perseverance, co-operation, empathy and understanding were all needed as the team worked together in an attempt to stay afloat.

After a great deal of hard work the prototype seemed to be doing the job.

Alas it was not to be but Calder class had great fun splashing around and jumping in the lake.

The day was a huge success with confidence flying high and self esteem building. What a lovely way to spend a day.
